What is ERP?
One software system in which a company keeps its accounts, sales, purchasing, stock and projects, so everyone works from the same data. You enter an order once and the rest of the business builds on it, instead of retyping it into separate spreadsheets and programs. In business software this is called ERP.
In practice
What it means for your SME
Picture a wholesaler with a small office team. Sales keeps orders in a spreadsheet, the warehouse works from its own list and the bookkeeper retypes the invoices. When a customer disputes a price, or an item turns out not to be in stock, someone has to lay three files side by side to find out what was agreed. An ERP system exists to remove exactly that problem.
The idea is simple: one place for your data. A customer, an item or an order is entered once. The salesperson uses it, the warehouse uses it and the financial effects flow into the general ledger without anyone retyping them. Because nothing is copied by hand, fewer mistakes creep in.
What goes wrong without it? Figures drift apart, a quote uses an out-of-date price, and at month end it takes days to work out why the stock in the books does not match what is on the shelves. As the company grows, that workload grows with it, while no extra revenue comes in to pay for it.
Two things matter when you choose. Does the system fit the way your business actually works, without needing everything adapted? And how do your existing records get into it? A careful data migration often decides more of the outcome than the brand name does. If you want to know what it means when such a system runs over the internet, read about cloud ERP.
An ERP system is not a goal in itself. It is a tool for making your administration calmer and more reliable. Start with the processes that currently cost the most manual work, and widen the scope only once the team is comfortable with it.
Uniconta
How it works in Uniconta
Uniconta is cloud-based ERP and accounting software. Operion sets up the general ledger and reporting structure, relations and items, purchasing and sales, inventory and project administration.
Order data is entered once and reused, with checks on price, discount and delivery. We implement proven software to a fixed standard and we do not develop custom work in Uniconta. That is why we can give a fixed price.
